Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “^(A)Do not let your heart be troubled; ^[a]believe in God, believe also in Me. ² In My Father’s house are many ^[b]rooms; if that were not so, ^[c]I would have told you, because ^(B)I am going there to prepare a place for you. ³ And if I go and prepare a place for you, ^(C)I am coming again and will take you to Myself, so that ^(D)where I am, there you also will be. ⁴ And you know the way where I am going.” ^5 (E)Thomas *said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going; how do we know the way?” ⁶ Jesus *said to him, “I am ^(F)the way, and ^(G)the truth, and ^(H)the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.

Oneness with the Father

^7 (I)If you ^[d]had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you ^(J)know Him, and have ^(K)seen Him.”

^8 (L)Philip *said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” ⁹ Jesus *said to him, “Have I been with ^[e]you for so long a time, and yet ^[f]you have not come to know Me, Philip? ^(M)The one who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? ¹⁰ Do you not believe that ^(N)I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? ^(O)The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own, but the Father, as He remains in Me, does His works.

¹⁵ “^(A)If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

The Holy Spirit

¹⁶ I will ask the Father, and He will give you another ^[a](B)Helper, so that He may be with you forever; ¹⁷ the Helper is ^(C)the Spirit of truth, ^(D)whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you.

¹⁸ “I will not leave you as orphans; ^(E)I am coming to you. ^19 [b](F)After a little while, ^(G)the world no longer is going to see Me, but you are going to see Me; ^(H)because I live, you also will live.

^22 (A)Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, “Lord, what has happened ^(B)that You are going to reveal Yourself to us and not to the world?” ²³ Jesus answered and said to him, “^(C)If anyone loves Me, he will ^(D)follow My word; and ^(E)My Father will love him, and We ^(F)will come to him and make Our dwelling with him. ²⁴ The one who does not love Me ^(G)does not follow My words; and ^(H)the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

²⁵ “These things I have spoken to you while remaining with you. ²⁶ But the ^(I)Helper, the Holy Spirit ^(J)whom the Father will send in My name, ^(K)He will teach you all things, and ^(L)remind you of all that I said to you.

^11 (A)These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your ^(B)joy may be made full.

Disciples’ Relation to Each Other

¹² “This is ^(C)My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. ^13 (D)Greater love has no one than this, that a person will ^(E)lay down his life for his friends. ¹⁴ You are My ^(F)friends if ^(G)you do what I command you. ¹⁵ No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because ^(H)all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. ^16 (I)You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and ^(J)bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that ^(K)whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. ¹⁷ This ^(L)I command you, that you love one another.

Disciples’ Relation to the World

¹⁸ “^(M)If the world hates you, ^[a]you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. ¹⁹ If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but ^(N)I chose you out of the world, ^(O)because of this the world hates you. ²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you, ‘^(P)A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, ^(Q)they will persecute you as well; if they ^(R)followed My word, they will follow yours also. ²¹ But all these things they will do to you ^(S)on account of My name, ^(T)because they do not know the One who sent Me.

Jesus’ Warning

16 “^(A)These things I have spoken to you so that you will not ^[a]be ^(B)led into sin. ² They will ^[b](C)ban you from the synagogue, yet ^(D)an hour is coming for everyone ^(E)who kills you to think that he is offering a ^[c]service to God. ³ These things they will do ^(F)because they have not known the Father nor Me. ⁴ But these things I have spoken to you, ^(G)so that when their hour comes, you ^[d]may remember that I told you of them. However, I did not say these things to you ^(H)at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Holy Spirit Promised

⁵ “But now ^(I)I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘^(J)Where are You going?’ ⁶ But because I have said these things to you, ^(K)grief has filled your heart. ⁷ But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the ^[e](L)Helper will not come to you; but if I go, ^(M)I will send Him to you.

Jesus’ Death and Resurrection Foretold

¹⁶ “^(A)A little while, and ^(B)you no longer are going to see Me; and again a little while, and ^(C)you will see Me.” ¹⁷ So some of His disciples said to one another, “What is this that He is telling us, ‘^(D)A little while, and you are not going to see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because ^(E)I am going to the Father’?” ¹⁸ So they were saying, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.” ^19 (F)Jesus knew that they wanted to question Him, and He said to them, “Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you are not going to see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’? ²⁰ Truly, truly I say to you that ^(G)you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but ^(H)your grief will be turned into joy! ^21 (I)Whenever a woman is in labor she has ^[a]pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a ^[b]child has been born into the world. ²² Therefore ^(J)you too have grief now; but ^(K)I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one is going to take your joy away from you.

²⁵ “These things I have spoken to you in ^(A)figures of speech; ^(B)an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father.

²⁷ for ^(A)the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and ^(B)have believed that ^(C)I came forth from the Father. ^28 (D)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and ^(E)going to the Father.”

²⁹ His disciples *said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and are not ^[a]using any ^(F)figure of speech. ³⁰ Now we know that You know all things, and that You have no need for anyone to question You; this is why we ^(G)believe that You ^(H)came forth from God.” ³¹ Jesus replied to them, “Do you now believe? ³² Behold, ^(I)an hour is coming, and has already come, for ^(J)you to be scattered, each to ^(K)his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet ^(L)I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. ³³ These things I have spoken to you so that ^(M)in Me you may have peace. ^(N)In the world you have tribulation, but ^(O)take courage; ^(P)I have overcome the world.”
